How to Properly Clean and Maintain Your Dentures: Tips from Pittsburgh Experts

March 10, 2025

Just like natural teeth, dentures require careful care and cleaning to ensure they look and function at their best. Whether you have partial or complete dentures, you can remove them to keep them clean, comfortable, and stain-free.

At Denture Express, our experts have created a guide to help you care for your dentures. Our top tips for denture care include:

Always Handle Your Dentures With Care

It's crucial to handle your dentures carefully. While cleaning, ensure you don't bend or damage the clasps or plastic.

Brush Your Dentures Daily

You should remove your dentures and clean them gently every day. You can do this by soaking them in a denture cleaner and brushing them with a soft-bristled brush. It is crucial to avoid abrasive or harsh cleaners or brushes. Brushing can remove plaque, food, or other deposits that could stain your dentures. Avoid using whitening toothpaste on the dentures because it often contains peroxide, which can change the color of the dentures.

If you use denture adhesive, clean out the grooves that sit against your gums and remove all leftover adhesive.

Remove and Rinse Your Dentures After Eating

After a meal or snack, you should take your dentures out and rinse them with cool water. This will help remove food debris and other loose particles. You should place a towel on the counter or sink or fill the sink with water to prevent the dentures from breaking if you accidentally drop them.

Clean Your Mouth After Removing Your Dentures

When you remove your dentures, use a bristled brush on your natural teeth. You can also use a soft toothbrush or gauze to clean your tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth. If dental adhesive remains on your gums, remove that as well. Do not use denture cleaner in your mouth.

Soak Dentures to Keep Them Clean

Soaking your dentures overnight will help keep them pliable and moist and help them retain their shape. You can soak them in water—never hot or boiling, as this can warp the plastic—or a mild denture cleansing solution. Always store dentures in water, cleanser, or the proper denture case or container to ensure they don't get broken or lost.

It's also important to follow all manufacturer instructions for soaking or cleaning solutions. Do not use products with bleach, as they can discolor or weaken your dentures.

Always Rinse Dentures Thoroughly After Soaking

Denture cleaning solutions contain harmful chemicals. Ingesting them could cause pain, burns, or vomiting if they are swallowed. By rinsing them thoroughly, you can avoid these issues.

Attend Regular Dental Checkups

Schedule regular dental checkups. At these appointments, your dentist can check that your dentures fit correctly and comfortably without slipping. They will also check to make sure your mouth is healthy.

Additionally, your dentist can recommend how often your dentures must be inspected and professionally cleaned.

What Should I Do If My Dentures Are Loose?

If your dentures are loose, you should get an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. If you continue to wear loose dentures, this can lead to:

  • Irritation
  • Infection
  • Sores

In some cases, the dentures may need to be relined for a proper fit, while in others, a new denture may be needed to solve the issue.

At Denture Express, we know just how important your dentures are to your daily life. For many of our patients, dentures aren't just a part of their dental care—they’re part of who they are. They help you enjoy meals with family, speak clearly at work or in social settings, and feel confident when you smile. So when something goes wrong—a crack, a break, a missing tooth—it can be frustrating, uncomfortable, and sometimes even a little stressful. We’ve heard it time and again: people need their dentures repaired quickly and correctly, but they don’t always know where to turn or how long they’ll have to wait. That’s where we come in. At Denture Express, we’ve been serving the Pittsburgh area since 1985 with one clear goal: to provide fast, dependable denture repairs with a focus on comfort, convenience, and care. Whether your denture was made by us or someone else, we’re here to help. Denture Repairs Aren’t Just Cosmetic—they’re Essential. A lot of people assume that dentures are purely cosmetic, but anyone who wears them knows better. Dentures allow you to chew properly, which supports good nutrition and overall health. They help you speak clearly and avoid slurred or altered speech. And they support your facial structure, maintaining the natural contours of your cheeks and jaw. When a denture becomes damaged—even slightly—it can interrupt all of those things. A chipped tooth might make you self-conscious. A hairline crack could eventually split further under pressure. A poor fit can lead to sore spots, irritation, or problems with eating. And in some cases, you may not be able to wear the dentures at all until they’re fixed. That’s why prompt, professional repairs aren’t just about convenience. They’re about protecting your health, preserving your comfort, and getting you back to life as usual. The Problem with Waiting for Repairs We’ve met many patients who were surprised at how long other offices told them they’d have to wait for a repair. At traditional dental practices, denture work is often sent to an outside lab. That means your dentures leave the office, get mailed to a third-party facility, and then come back several days later—sometimes up to a week or more. Not only does that create unnecessary delay, but it also adds anxiety to an already stressful situation. If your only set of dentures is out for repair, it’s not always easy—or even possible—to go about your daily life while you wait. Temporary fixes, like at-home repair kits, often make things worse in the long run. We’ve heard stories of people missing important events, struggling through meals, or even avoiding social gatherings because they didn’t want to be without their dentures in public. Our Approach: Same-Day Denture Repairs At Denture Express, our approach is different—and simple. We handle most denture repairs right here in our on-site lab, often within an hour. That means you can walk in with broken dentures and walk out the very same day with a fully functional set. Because we specialize solely in dentures, we’re equipped with the tools, materials, and expertise to perform a wide variety of repairs quickly and effectively. Whether it’s a cracked base or a chipped tooth, we’ve seen it before—and we know how to fix it. This on-site model allows us to avoid long shipping delays, eliminate third-party lab errors, and reduce the time you’re without your dentures. Repairs Done Right—The First Time Quick service is only part of the equation. We also believe in doing the job well and standing behind our work. That’s why we offer a written warranty on every repair—even if we didn’t initially make your dentures. You don’t have to worry about being turned away just because your dentures came from a different provider. We treat every patient and every repair with care. From the moment you walk through the door, we aim to make the process clear, comfortable, and efficient. Our experienced team will evaluate the damage, explain your options, and get to work restoring your dentures with attention to detail. Support When—and Where—You Need It We understand that life doesn’t always go according to plan. A denture emergency can happen before a big event, over the weekend, or when your schedule is already packed. That’s why we offer flexible appointment times that include evenings and weekends, to accommodate busy lives and unexpected needs. We also offer in-home visits for seniors in the Pittsburgh area, making denture repairs more accessible for those who may have trouble getting to our office. This personalized service is especially helpful for individuals in retirement communities, assisted living, or those with limited mobility. At Denture Express, we don’t believe you should have to jump through hoops to get your dentures fixed. We’ve built our services to be flexible and accessible because we know that’s what real people need. 40 Years of Focused Experience With more than four decades of experience behind us, we’ve seen just about every kind of denture repair imaginable. Our team is made up of specialists who focus exclusively on dentures, so you’re not dealing with a general practice that only occasionally handles repairs. That experience allows us to work quickly without cutting corners, and to offer helpful advice when you have questions about maintenance, adjustments, or long-term care. We’re proud to be part of the local community, and many of our patients have been with us for years. Whether you’ve visited us before or it’s your first time, we’ll take the time to listen, explain, and provide a service you can trust. A Repair Process That Puts You First We know that needing a repair can feel stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. When you visit Denture Express, you’ll never be left wondering what’s going on or how long it will take. From start to finish, we’ll communicate clearly and handle your dentures with the care they deserve. Whether you’ve chipped a tooth, cracked a base, or want a professional opinion on an issue you’ve noticed, we’re here to help you feel comfortable and confident again. If you ever find yourself in need of a denture repair, we hope you’ll think of us. We’re here to make sure that your repair isn’t a burden—it’s just a quick stop on the way back to feeling like yourself. Learn more or get in touch at dentureexpress.org/denture-repair . Walk-ins are welcome, and we always strive for same-day service.
